About Louisiana Beer
The state of Louisiana has been brewing beer since January 1723, when Pierre Dreux built La Brassiere in New Orleans. Since then there were numerous breweries built in the 1800’s and 1900’s all within the city of New Orleans. Some notable breweries included Jax Brewery in 1891, Dixie Beer in 1907 and Falstaff in 1936. Dixie is the sole survivor of the early breweries, but in 1986 Abita Brewing Company opened which has become the state’s largest brewery. In recent years Louisiana has seen an emergence of taprooms and breweries.
