About Oregon Beer
Oregon’s brewing history actually predates its statehood. Oregon became a state in 1859, but it saw its first brewery in 1854 when Charles Barrett opened the Portland Brewery and General Grocery Establishment. Then in 1856, Henry Saxer would open the Liberty Brewery in Portland. By the time Oregon became a state, they had 5-operating breweries! Unfortunately Oregon voted to ban alcohol in 1914 (5 years before National Prohibition) and the breweries suffered. It wasn’t until Jimmy Carter signed in H.R. 1337 in 1978, which created an exemption for beer brewed at home for personal or family use. As Oregonians began to brew beer, the state finally passed Oregon’s brewpub law in 1985, which allowed the brewing and dispensing of beer on the same premises. Since that time Oregon has over 230 breweries, serving the state with delicious beer!
