About Michigan Beer
Michigan’s beer history began in 1849, when German immigrant Christoph Kusterer established City Brewery in Grand Rapids. There were other breweries to follow in Lansing, Traverse City and other towns along the Lower Peninsula. The state’s brewing industry would take a hit in 1918 when prohibition came into effect. It took the state some time to recover, but the craft beer movement around 2010 would add growth. Currently there are more than 200 brewing factories in the state and Michigan is ranked 5th in the country in number of breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs.
