About South Korean Beer
Beer’s journey in Korea began in the early 20th century during Japanese colonial rule. Seoul’s first brewery opened its doors in 1908, marking the start of a brewing legacy. By the 1930s, the market was dominated by two giants: Hite (formerly Chosun Breweries) and OB (Oriental Brewery).
Following the Korean War, strict regulations favored large-scale production, solidifying the dominance of Hite and OB. However, the 1980s brought change as import restrictions eased, introducing foreign beers to Korean palates. A pivotal moment arrived in 2002 with the FIFA World Cup, when the government relaxed licensing laws, paving the way for a craft beer revolution.
Today, South Korea boasts a thriving craft beer scene, with countless breweries offering unique flavors. While Hite and OB remain major players, the beer landscape is rapidly evolving, showcasing a diverse and dynamic market.
