About the Brewery
Francis Xavier ‘F.X.’ Matt came to the US from Germany in 1878, where he began working for Carl Bierbauer’s Columbia Brewery. In 1888, he would transform the Bierbauer Brewery into the West End Brewing Company. Prohibition was enacted in 1920 and the brewery would survive this terrible time in American history by producing Utica Club soft drinks. When Prohibition ended in 1933, the West End Brewing Co. was the first in the nation to obtain a license and to sell beer.

In 1980 F.X. Matt II would become president of the brewery and rename the F.X. Matt Brewing Co. in recognition of his grandfather. The brewery is now known as the Matt Brewing Company and it is the 4th oldest family-owned brewery in the US. It’s most popular beer is Saranac.

About the Brewery
In 1871 Gottlieb Brekle bought an old saloon in San Francisco, which he would transform into a brewery. In 1896 Gottlieb’s brewery was purchased by Ernst Baruth and Otto Schinkel Jr. and the duo renamed it Anchor. Ernst Baruth would die suddenly in 1906, and Otto Schinkel Jr. would die in 1907 after being run over by a streetcar. Anchor brewing was in jeopardy until Joseph Kraus, August Meyer and Henry Tietjen came in to save the day. Unfortunately in 1920 Prohibition would hit and the brewery shuttered their doors once again. When Prohibition ended in 1933, Joe Kraus would begin brewing Anchor Steam Beer, until a fire would destroy the brewery. Kraus and a new partner, Joe Allen, would re-open the brewery and once again help to grow beer sales. Kraus passed away in 1952, and seven years later their sales declined and Allen would shut the doors.

In 1960 Lawrence Steese purchased Anchor, but 5-years later he was ready to close the doors. Fritz Maytag would step-in and buy 51% of the brewery, saving it from its imminent bankruptcy. In 1971, Fritz began bottling Anchor Steam and 4-years later they had produced four other distinctive beers. Fritz would announce his retirement in 2010 and sell the brewery to Keith Greggor and Tony Foglio. In 2017 Saporro purchased Anchor and remains the current owner of the iconic brewery.

Beer Reviews:
Tobin’s Review 3 out of 5
Anchor Christmas Ale has a pitch black hue with a small tan head that dissipates quickly. The beer has aromas of very sweet malt. On the tongue the beer is soft and dry with flavors of banana bread that ends very dry with a slight bitterness from the hops.

Description:
Brewmaster, Jeremy Marshall, has reimagined the classic recipe using Newcastle’s traditional ingredients, but fermented with Lagunitas’ English house ale yeast. This reimagined Newcastle Brown Ale is a smooth, crisp, slightly roasty and hoppier beer, that’s not too bitter, not too sweet, and altogether uncommon. Brewed with Centennial and Chinook hops and available in the US market. 4.7% ABV.

Glass to Use:
Brown Ales are best served in a Pint glass.

About the Brewery
Lagunitas Brewing Company was founded in 1993 by Tony Magee in Lagunitas, California. A year later he was forced to move to Petaluma, CA when they outgrew the original location. By 2011 Lagunitas Brewing had 92 employees with distribution to 32 states. In 2012 Lagunitas announced plans to build a brewery in Chicago which started producing beer in 2014. In 2015 Heineken International swooped in and acquired 50% stake in the company to help it expand globally. In 2017, Heineken purchased the remaining portion making it sole owner of the brewery. While Heineken owns Lagunitas, Tony Magee is still the CEO of the company.

Beer Reviews:
Tobin’s Review 3 out of 5
Newcastle Brown Ale isn’t what it used to be. I didn’t know at the time that they had begun brewing the beer at Lagunitas and that Lagunitas had altered the recipe. What used to be one of my favorites go-to beers has sadly turned into a disappointment. The beer still has that chocolate brown color that we have become so fond of. It’s still smooth with a mouthful of chocolate and nuttiness but I found it to be not as refreshing, a little more bitter and honestly just kind of flat. I will definitely cut back on my Newcastle consumption…. unless I can find the formula that is brewed in the Netherlands! DISAPPOINTING!!!

Description:
Abita Turbodog is a dark brown ale brewed with pale/ caramel/ chocolate malts, Willamette hops and German Ale yeast. This combination gives Turbodog its rich body and color and a sweet chocolate, toffee-like flavor. Turbodog began as a specialty ale, but has gained a huge, loyal following and has become one of Abita’s flagship brews.

Abita Turbodog has dark chocolatey color and the nose of the beer has a chocolate aroma. The beer is heavier and tastes like a cross between a Stout and a Porter. It has a nice chocolate taste and is much smoother than a heavier Stout. Overall it is a good beer.
