The Spoetzl Brewery was founded in 1909 in Shiner, Texas. The original name of the brewery was the Shiner Brewing Association and it was headed by Herman Weiss who was the company’s first brewmaster. As the brewery gained in popularity they searched for a trained professional brewmaster which they found in Kosmos Spoetzl. They withstood this difficult time by selling ice and making ‘near beer’ (which is basically non-alcoholic beer.) After prohibition, the brewery resumed operations but kept business small. They never produced over 60,000 barrels in a year until the Gambrinus Company purchased the brewery in 1989. By 1994 production had grown to 100,000 barrels and it would triple over the next ten years. As of 2012 Spoetzl was the 4th largest craft brewery in the US.

Beer Reviews:
Tobin’s Review 3.5 out of 5
Shiner Holiday Cheer has a bronze hue, a thick off-white head and sweet peach aromas on the nose. The beer is semi-sweet, where it starts out sweet, then you taste the grain, a bit of bitterness and is followed by a lingering fruit finish. This is a really good holiday beer. Merry Drinkmas!

In 2007 they relocated to a larger facility outside the city limits of Blanco, which would help them to scale production. In 2017 they launched Real Spirits Distilling Company, which produces gin and whiskey.

Description:
Lone Star Beer is an American style lager that has a clear golden color with a fluffy white head. The beer has aromas of light malt, sweet citrus and grain. The beer tastes crisp with a somewhat sweet and grainy finish.

Glass to Use:
Lagers are best served in a pint glass.

About the Brewery
The Lone Star Brewery was founded in 1884 by Adolphus Busch (of Anheuser-Busch) in San Antonio. It was the first large mechanized brewery in the state of Texas. Unfortunately the Brewery would close from 1918-1933 due to prohibition, but by 1965 the company’s annual sales would exceed 1-million barrels. The brewery was sold in 1976 to Olympia Brewing Company which was based out of Tumwater, Washington. The brewery would change ownership a few more times (G. Heileman Brewing Company and Stroh Brewery Company) before the Pabst Brewing Company took over. In 2005 Lone Star would celebrate 65 years as the National Beer of Texas. The brewery is still owned by Pabst Brewing and they currently contract production to Miller Brewing Company in Fort Worth.

Beer Reviews:
Tobin’s Review 4 out of 5
Lone Star Beer has a light hay complexion with a small white head. The beer really doesn’t have much of an aroma, but I do pick up notes of light grain and hops. The beer is very smooth with a very light hops flavor. It’s really easy to drink and I can understand why it’s the National Beer of Texas!

Beer Reviews:
Tobin’s Review 4 out of 5
Deep Ellum IPA has a dark amber hue with a thick compact head. The nose of the beer has aromas of citrus hops. The beer is very smooth, with a caramel flavor, followed by a light citrus hops ending. It also boasts flavors of mustard or a slight horseradish hops, which is a bit bizarre to say; but I liked it. Overall it was a really good beer, but I couldn’t drink a lot of this. It’s not really my style, but definitely a quality beer!
