Francis Xavier ‘F.X.’ Matt came to the US from Germany in 1878, where he began working for Carl Bierbauer’s Columbia Brewery. In 1888, he would transform the Bierbauer Brewery into the West End Brewing Company. Prohibition was enacted in 1920 and the brewery would survive this terrible time in American history by producing Utica Club soft drinks. When Prohibition ended in 1933, the West End Brewing Co. was the first in the nation to obtain a license and to sell beer.

In 1980 F.X. Matt II would become president of the brewery and rename the F.X. Matt Brewing Co. in recognition of his grandfather. The brewery is now known as the Matt Brewing Company and it is the 4th oldest family-owned brewery in the US. Its most popular beer is Saranac.

Beer Reviews:
Tobin’s Review 3 out of 5
Mucho Aloha Pacific Pilsner has a light golden hue with a small head (almost looks like a Miller Lite.) The beer has malt and hops on the nose and is smooth with a little hops on the end of the palate. It’s an average beer, which actually comes across a little bitter for a Pilsner.

In 1855 Frederick Miller purchased the Plank Road Brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After the purchase Miller would rename the brewery the Miller Brewing Company. Tobin’s Review 4 out of 5
Modelo Especial has a bronze gold brick color with a small head that dissipates quickly. The beer has aromas of malt and a faint pepper aroma, with flavors of sweet malt. The beer is soft, crisp, clean and ends dry. Overall a good beer!

Tobin’s Review 3.5 out of 5
Corona Extra has a hay hue with a small compact head. It doesn’t have much of a nose, but is a smooth and creamy Pilsner. It often gets a bad reputation, but when you really sit down to evaluate it, it’s a pretty good beer.

Tobin’s Review 3 out of 5
Corona Familiar has a light golden hue with a very small head. I pickup notes of malt on the nose, and the beer is soft on the tongue with a malt overtone. Overall it’s a pretty good beer.
